E-Commerce Platform
Cloud Migration to AWS
A fast-growing online retailer was outgrowing its on-premise servers. Every peak sales event risked downtime, and scaling for traffic spikes meant buying and configuring hardware months in advance. We migrated the entire platform to AWS with a 3-week cutover and zero data loss.
The retailer's infrastructure was built for a fraction of its current traffic. Legacy on-premise servers couldn't scale during flash sales and holiday peaks, and every hardware upgrade meant weeks of lead time and manual configuration. Response times slowed under load and the team spent more time firefighting outages than shipping features.
Security was another growing concern. Payment data and customer records sat on aging infrastructure with inconsistent patching, and there was no unified way to monitor threats across the environment. Douglas Cloud Services was brought in to plan and execute a full migration to AWS without disrupting the storefront.
The Solution With a tight timeline and no room for downtime, we planned a phased migration and re-architected the platform around AWS-managed services — ECS for the application layer, RDS for the database, and CloudFront for global content delivery — replacing the fragile on-premise stack with infrastructure that scales automatically under load.
We ran the new environment in parallel with the old one,
mirroring live traffic and validating performance before
the final cutover. The full migration was completed in
three weeks with zero unplanned downtime.
Post-migration, the platform handles seasonal traffic spikes without
manual intervention. Auto-scaling groups add capacity automatically during
flash sales, and infrastructure costs dropped 40% compared to the
previous on-premise setup.
We layered in continuous monitoring, automated backups, and a
disaster recovery plan, delivering 99.9% uptime since going live on AWS.
With the new architecture in place, deploys that used to take
hours now take minutes. The team ships updates through an automated
CI/CD pipeline, spending their time building features instead of
managing servers.
Cloud cost optimization was built into the migration from day one. Right-sized instances, reserved capacity planning, and automated scaling policies keep spend aligned with actual demand instead of worst-case peak capacity.
Security was hardened throughout the migration — encrypted data
at rest and in transit, least-privilege access controls, and continuous
vulnerability scanning. The retailer's payment and customer data now
meets a stricter security baseline than the environment it replaced.
The result is a platform built to handle growth instead of limiting
it — with the cloud foundation, monitoring, and automation in place to
support the retailer's next phase of expansion.
